The Black Frames are multi-layered, low-relief paper sculptures inspired by American folk art frames from the turn of the last century. Initially conceived as family memorials, they quickly became objects that could connect my personal memories to a larger cultural memory. They employ the pattern and ornament found in many different decorative art traditions. My aim is to take the well-worn visual artifacts that have informed my cultural consciousness and re-combine them into a contemporary statement about our shared past.
