bio

As a painter, Michael Lee has always taken inspiration from the strong, graphic pattern found in textile design and the serial imagery associated with American pop artists. In an attempt to marry that abstract vocabulary with figuration, he began an ongoing series in 2004 using landscape as a vehicle to explore the gap between physical place and psychological space.

Raised in Texas, Michael received a BFA in art history from U.T. Austin and moved to New York in 1996 to get an MFA from Hunter College. He was an artist in residence at New York’s Cooper Union in 2005, and recently was awarded a fellowship to the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Studio. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn and teaches in New Jersey.
